Are we there yet?

Well we're closer to being there as we fly out today. 

Unfortunately minus Helen who has contracted pneumonia and is having a stay in the Epworth. Couldn't have been worse timing really. Hope you recover quickly Helen.

The joys (!!!!!) of packing will all be over shortly. I have regretfully changed from my sturdy orange bag which has been my constant travelling companion for years to a sleek black one. Never again will I be the person with the most easily identified bag at the baggage carousel. I'll be joining the ranks of the "is that my bag ....maybe not.....I don't think so.... I can't tell!" crew looking worried as they scan the bags whizzing past!!!

I was planning on blaming the weight of my bag on the fact that it's a new one BUT I have less weight than I was expecting!! Now I'm worried I've left important stuff behind!

Just get me to the plane on time!

Being prepared.....are we ever?

Day Four: Getting to know Jaffna

We had a busy day, including some adventures, today! After catching up on some sleep, Jan and I headed off for an early  morning walk to suss out life in Jaffna.  Having no idea where we might go we just walked along some main roads and then decided to explore the laneways to avoid the motorbikes, tuk tuks, occasional trucks and the unrelenting noise of honking horns. After a night of heavy rain we spent some time avoiding the puddles and mud.... and cow poo from a few sacred cows! We came across the market, several small community Hindu temples, a few quiet relaxed cows,  plenty of signs advertising education programs for children to improve their academic performance,  a large waterlily pond, a diverse range of housing ranging from basic to ornate, many decorative gates and a community health service.  We did discover an amazing temple which we will explore tomorrow.  We were looking at a derelict house when a local man stopped cycling by to ask us why. Day Three: Here comes the train.....to Jaffna!

As we get older and more susceptible to Health problems our baggage has changed from bikinis and skimpy clothes and maybe a Bandaid, to an impressive array of every sort of medication imaginable. Despite our substantial first aid kits (enough for an army to travel with!) last night we had to call for medical help for Anne. Within a couple of hours we had a very delightful and capable Doctor arrive, followed by two young nurses delivering medication and taking samples. Amazing service. There was some urgency as we were catching a 5.45 am train the next morning. With all of that attention the good news is that Anne recovered quickly. We all managed to get up early enough to get to the Colombo train station in the pouring rain in time to catch the 5.45 am train.
